Uploading PDF docs to iPhone without emailing them to yourself

I just upgraded to iOS 4 on my iPhone 3G and was happy to find the iBooks application on my iPhone, less because I thought myself likely to be buying lots of ebooks, but more because I've wanted an easy way to carry around PDF documents on my phone. However, the only way I could figure to upload the files to iBooks was to email them to myself, open up the documents in Mail and then transfer them to iBooks from the Mail app. Clearly, this isn't an ideal solution - I sought to find a better one.

The first thing I tried was to connect my phone to my computer and seeing if I could do something easily through iTunes. Once synced, I clicked the little dropdown for my phone on the iTunes sidebar and then clicked on books

When I did this I saw a list of the free Whinnie the Pooh Book that came with iBooks and a PDF that I had downloaded from Mail. I went for the obvious tactic of trying to drag some PDF files into this list. It was a no go.

I spent some time on google trying to figure out if there was some easy way to do what I was looking for. I could find just about next to nothing other than to use some other third party PDF viewing program.

Finally, I tried messing around a bit more and found that if instead of going to Books I went to Purchased I could drag PDF files into that list. Once I synced the phone, the PDFs found themselves nicely on my bookshelf.

I'm wondering why the more intuitive process of dragging into the books folder isn't supported. In any case, I'm easily able to do what I want and happy enough with that.

One quick note though to those who want to do the same thing I did - you have to make sure the files have a .pdf extension. I found that they won't load into the Purchased folder if you don't.

Happy iPhone PDFing.

Update (07/27/2010)

As pointed out in the comments below, you can also drag into the Library section within your iTunes sidebar. I'm not sure if this is a feature update or if, as the the commenter suggests, this is only possible once you already have uploaded PDFs into your library. Any feedback on this in the comments would be greatly appreciated.

... its actually a whole lot easier. After you have 1 in the folder that you have put there yourself, you can just click and drag them into the 'books' folder.

Hey, thanks for this. Yet even though I upgraded my iTouch to iOS4 and got the latest iTunes, I can't seem to find a "Purchased" area like it shows in your screen shot you posted. I have downloaded many things from the store, but only free things...is that why I have no purchased? I just see "iTunes Store" and below that "Downloads". What am I missing?

I tried this but it didn't work. One strange thing is I don't see the buttons "books" and "PDFs" at the top center of the iBooks screen. I wonder why, and if that's why I can't sync the PDF I'm trying to sync.

@CubedAssasin - Thanks for noting that. Though I would say "a whole lot more intuitive" rather than "a whole lot easier" as in either case it's still just a drag and drop. I'll update the article. Also, I'll point out that (at least for me) the books folder underneath the iPhone within the devices dropdown still does not work, but dragging into the library dropdown section does.

@Rich - I'm afraid I don't know why it's not working for you. I never purchased anything from iTunes store either (books nor music). I don't have an iTouch but I imagine it should work the same as for iPhone. Try CubedAssassin's approach and let us know if it works. You also might have to email yourself a pdf first. Good luck!

@Scott - I can only suggest to you what I suggested to Rich. Do let me know if you get it working. As for the books and pdf sections, that is a product of the fact that you haven't uploaded any pdfs into the iBooks application yet. The little "Books" and "PDFs" selector only shows up when you actually have PDFs on your phone's (iPod's) book library.

Thank you everyone for your comments.

Thank you, it worked. I sent the pdf in an email, opened it on my iphone, it asked, or there was an option, to view it in Books and it appeared in iBooks as an PDF. Also, when I reconnected my phone the PDF appeared in the Book section of the phone with a check mark next to it. Why simply dragging a PDF onto the Book icon in iTunes or into the Book section (tab) of the iPhone's content doesn't work seems restrictive and aught to be corrected -- most likely will in a later version. Thanks again for offering a solution.

I don't have an iBook, so I really can't say for sure, but it seems like things shouldn't work too much differently. What is not coming up on the sidebar? Your iBook? That would seem to be a defect, assuming you have the iBook plugged in. You should be able to just drag a pdf into your library section (the top most section in your sidebar) as was pointed out above, and then sync and have it show up on your bookshelf. Again, I'm not sure whether this works only works once you have a PDF in your library already (through email transfer), but my guess is that it will work even before. Let us know.

What worked for me was:
-- Add the pdf or books files to itunes as normal.
-- Open itunes and expanded the iphone portion to where you can view all of the folders on your phone.
-- Open the books folder of itunes, highlight your files and drag them to the phone.

This forces a sync and from that point on all of my files showed up in ibooks. The extra step is annoying but since you would normally have itunes open and have to sit around waiting for the sync to happen anyway it doesn't amount to too much of the day wasted. At least that's what I tell myself as I grumble about having to move files that should transfer automatically. My guess is that somebody forgot to put in the code that tells itunes to sync the book folders since forcing the sync makes everything transfer and work smoothly. Just a guess , though.

Just dragged a pdf icon from my desktop onto the library section of iTunes. Worked like a charm! I had never uploaded pdfs into my library before.

Turns out I needed one more step to see the files on my phone. That was to drag the pdf icons from the library section of iTunes to the device section while iphone was plugged in.

Even easier.
Sign up for the free dropbox account; install dropbox app on your iphone and pc; on your pc save your pdf files to your dropbox folder; wait a bit for them to upload to dropbox, open iphone dropbox app, find the pdf file, download and start reading. For offline reading save the file as favourites in the iphone dropbox app. It also works with Word files.

I'm pretty sure this will work on other smartphones.

Advantage: No need to install iBooks, Kindle etc....
Files viewable anywhere on any device
If you loose your device you won't loose your files.

Disadvantage: pdf files are not optimised for mobile access.
Viewer may not be as good, but can't say for sure.

Don't forget to use a strong password on your dropbox account.
